About the position

This position involves performing technical work in public safety communications under close supervision. The role is responsible for operating various communication systems, managing emergency and non-emergency calls, and dispatching appropriate personnel to respond to incidents. It requires maintaining awareness of law enforcement activities and ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive information.

Responsibilities

  • Operate fixed base communications equipment including CAD and 911 systems.
  • Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Interview callers to gather details and prioritize calls for service.
  • Calm and counsel distraught callers in emergency situations.
  • Dispatch emergency responders and relay pertinent information to law enforcement personnel.
  • Monitor radio channels and provide immediate information and assistance.
  • Maintain status and awareness of Sheriff's patrol units and monitor alarms.
  • Track the location and activities of all officers on duty.
  • Log messages transmitted and received and enter emergency assistance calls into CAD incident logs.
  • Input and update information into NCIC computer systems and law enforcement databases.
  • Retrieve information from automated files for checks on warrants, driver licenses, and vehicle registrations.
  • Compose, send, and receive messages via criminal justice computer system.
  • Operate and maintain telephone recording system.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures in providing assistance to law enforcement and emergency services personnel.
  • Notify other State/Federal and regional agencies as directed.
  • Notify administration on critical incidents.
  • Read and interpret maps to assist in locating geographical areas for public and law enforcement personnel.
  • Perform various clerical tasks and maintain security and confidentiality of sensitive information.

Requirements

  • Technical proficiency in operating communication equipment and systems.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for interviewing callers and relaying information.
  • Familiarity with law enforcement procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
