About the position

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) plays a crucial role in providing initial life support interventions and assisting in the care of patients in the emergency department. This position involves stabilizing patients, communicating with families, and supporting nursing staff in various tasks to ensure efficient patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial basic life support interventions on emergency department patients.
  • Initiate life-saving measures such as opening airways and controlling hemorrhage.
  • Stabilize and extricate injured patients from vehicles at the emergency department entrance.
  • Assist patients to and from vehicles and the emergency department.
  • Act as a liaison between the patient family and emergency staff, maintaining open communication regarding patient conditions.
  • Transport patients from triage/waiting area to the treatment area as requested by the Nurse.
  • Perform EKGs and vital signs as directed by the nurse.
  • Assist patients with care needs and requests for information.
  • Label specimens and ensure they are received by the nurse or ED Tech.
  • Conduct hourly rounding for patient needs, comfort, and pain rating.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Qualified as an ED Technician through one of nine specified ways.
  • Current South Carolina State Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) or equivalent experience.
  • Basic Life Saving (BLS) Certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a hospital setting as a Clinical Secretary or similar role.
  • Phlebotomy training and certification.
  • Successful completion of a Dysrhythmia course.
