About the position

The Emergency Department Technician at McLaren Macomb plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing and medical staff in the emergency department. This position involves providing both direct and indirect patient care, assisting with various medical procedures, and performing clerical duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The technician is responsible for ensuring that patients receive timely and effective care in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care, assisting nursing and physician staff with patient care procedures.
  • Administers oxygen via nasal cannula or simple mask as directed by Clinical Nurse.
  • Administers enemas as directed.
  • Performs 12 lead EKG and straight catheterization.
  • Provides orthopedic treatments including ace wraps, application and removal of Teds, applying splints, assisting with casting, and adjusting and fitting crutches.
  • Inventories and restocks emergency department equipment.
  • Collects and transports specimens such as urine, blood, and cultures.
  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients, initiates and discontinues intravenous lines, cleans and prepares examination room between patients.
  • Places patients on monitors, provides wound care, assists with orthopedic procedures and other emergency room procedures as requested.
  • Reports and records observations in the patient medical record.
  • Reports patient care needs and changes in condition to the nursing staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, or Medical Assistant OR a currently enrolled Nursing student who has completed their first Med/Surg rotation OR one year of experience, within the past 2 years, as an Emergency Department Technician, or similarly titled role, with duties that include specimen collection/processing, 12 lead EKG, and straight catheterization OR McLaren Macomb Emergency Department employees in the role of Nursing Assistant prior to June 25, 2019 who have successfully completed the Emergency Department Technician training program.
  • BLS card from AHA required before start date (valid at least 60 days beyond start date).

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience working in an Emergency Department.
