About the position

At Children's Wisconsin, we are dedicated to the health and well-being of children, providing a wide range of services including primary care, specialty care, urgent care, emergency care, and more. As an Emergency Department Communicator, you will play a crucial role in managing clinical information and coordinating clinical caregivers within the Emergency Department Trauma Center. This position requires you to work under general supervision, adhering to established policies and procedures while ensuring efficient patient flow and communication among team members. You will be responsible for triaging incoming calls, recognizing crisis situations, and coordinating diagnostic services to facilitate patient care. Your role will also involve monitoring emergency management alerts and participating in patient tracking during disasters, ensuring that all necessary information is relayed to the appropriate staff members. In this position, you will act as a vital link between patients and caregivers, greeting and guiding patients and their families, and providing them with essential information regarding the Emergency Department Trauma Center process. You will be expected to maintain an efficient and orderly environment, re-prioritizing your workload as conditions change, and initiating requests for services from ancillary departments. Additionally, you will ensure the confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations, managing the patient's skinny record and ensuring all documents are accurately labeled and sent to medical records upon discharge. This role is essential in creating a supportive and responsive environment for both patients and healthcare providers, contributing to the overall mission of Children's Wisconsin to provide the best care for children.

Responsibilities

  • Manage clinical information and coordinate clinical caregivers for the Emergency Department Trauma Center.
  • Triage incoming telephone calls and recognize crisis calls (911).
  • Coordinate diagnostic services to ensure efficient patient flow within Children's Wisconsin and off-site facilities.
  • Relay critical information to necessary staff members in emergency situations.
  • Monitor WI track for ED diversions and community emergency management alerts.
  • Act as a liaison with Admitting, Scheduling, and Registration to arrange patient placement.
  • Maintain an efficient and orderly environment in the Emergency Department.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Facilitate patient transport and coordinate with Environmental Services for maintenance needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of healthcare experience in a health unit coordinator or similar role.
  • Data entry and database maintenance skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and prioritizing skills.
  • Critical thinking and crisis intervention skills.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective communication with physicians, patients, and team members.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and common Emergency Department procedures.

Nice-to-haves
