About the position

The Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care and support in a fast-paced emergency environment. This role involves assisting medical staff with patient admissions, treatments, and various procedures while ensuring patient safety and comfort. The technician is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the work area and equipment, as well as documenting patient information accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Responds effectively in emergencies.
  • Assists RN/physician in the admission of patients, orienting them to their surroundings, transferring patients, and assisting in discharges.
  • Utilizes restraints and protective mechanisms with proper documentation.
  • Assists with treatments as directed, including foley catheter care, oral tracheal/nasal suctioning, enemas, dressing changes, and perineal care.
  • Performs venipuncture and intravenous access.
  • Records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry.
  • Adheres to universal precautions and complies with established occupational exposure policies.
  • Participates in patient care conferences, providing input in patient care planning and teaching.
  • Observes, reports, and documents unusual symptoms, condition changes, and care delivered according to DEM policy.
  • Assists patients with mobility, including turning, lifting, positioning, and ambulating.
  • Maintains cubicle and equipment in an orderly fashion, cleans, restocks, and orders supplies as necessary.
  • Completes ongoing age-specific and annual competency validation as required.
  • Maintains proficiency in patient care testing as defined by lab evaluation criteria.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a Licensed Practical Nurse course, Medical Assistant, Surgical Technician, or Paramedic Program.
  • Basic knowledge regarding the care of patients and the operation of monitors.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change in healthcare environments.
  • Good working relationships with medical staff and other personnel involved in patient care.
  • Skills in nursing and technology management.
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques concerning patient and personnel management.
