Emergency Dispatcher

About the position

The Emergency Dispatcher plays a crucial role in public safety by serving as the vital link between callers and first responders. This position involves receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for various public safety agencies, including law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services. Dispatchers must make urgent decisions that impact the safety and welfare of the public and are required to maintain certifications in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Dispatcher Certification through POST.

Responsibilities

• Receives 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls.
• Interrogates callers to determine the nature and location of incidents.
• Dispatches law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and fire personnel as needed.
• Interprets information from callers to prioritize incidents and make urgent decisions.
• Calms callers and provides necessary instructions during emergencies.
• Relays geographical information to responding units.
• Monitors multiple computer screens to track calls for service and on-duty personnel.
• Accesses and maintains confidential files related to wanted persons and other records.
• Monitors and transmits information over multiple radio frequencies.
• Informs appropriate agencies of law enforcement, fire, and EMS-related calls.
• Receives, updates, and broadcasts Amber Alert notifications.

Requirements

• Valid Driver's License.
• Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute.
• Experience in accurately transcribing spoken information.
• Ability to maintain composure in crisis situations.
• Skill in prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls.
• Ability to operate various radio and telephone communications equipment.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in emergency dispatching or public safety communications.
• Familiarity with emergency medical dispatch protocols.
