About the position

The Emergency Management Coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and disaster resilience of the university community. This position is responsible for analyzing the university's strengths and weaknesses, available resources, and risk ratios to design and implement comprehensive preparedness plans and programs. The primary goal is to control, eliminate, and prevent personal injury, property damage, and environmental impacts caused by various factors. The Emergency Management Coordinator must possess substantial knowledge of emergency management principles and relevant federal and state regulations to effectively manage the university's emergency preparedness efforts. In this role, the Emergency Management Coordinator will assist in the development, implementation, and activation of the university's emergency operations and continuity plans. They will serve as the primary Emergency Planning and Response Team Manager, coordinating with external stakeholders during incidents related to disasters. This position also involves performing activities surrounding special events in accordance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS). The Emergency Management Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Emergency Management to oversee the overall administration of the university's Emergency Management Program, ensuring that all aspects of emergency management are integrated and effective. The position requires a proactive approach to emergency management, with a focus on collaboration and communication across various departments and external entities. The Emergency Management Coordinator will be expected to lead initiatives that promote a culture of safety and preparedness within the university community, fostering an environment where all members are informed and equipped to respond to emergencies effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the university's strengths, weaknesses, available resources, and risk ratios to design and implement preparedness plans and programs.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and activation of the university's emergency operations and continuity plans.
  • Serve as the primary Emergency Planning and Response Team Manager.
  • Coordinate and serve as the university liaison with external stakeholders during disaster-related incidents.
  • Perform activities surrounding special events in accordance with NIMS and ICS.
  • Support the Director of Emergency Management in the overall administration of the university Emergency Management Program.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree is strongly preferred; a bachelor's degree in emergency management, public administration, public health, planning, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in emergency planning, public safety, or coordinating programs or operations of a similar nature.
  • FEMA or other disaster training is desirable; Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) certification is preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in leading emergency management or continuity programs.
  • Familiarity with EMAP standards and accreditation process.
  • Ability to integrate strategies and network and coordinate services with a broad range of participants.
  • Understanding of the Incident Command System, the National Incident Management System, and legal concepts related to emergency operations.
  • Familiarity with FEMA application and documentation procedures.
  • Experience leading knowledgeable subject matter experts and developing staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Coalition building and collaboration skills; commitment to diversity, inclusion, and collaborative decision-making.
