About the position

The Emergency Medical Services Educator position at the Los Angeles Fire Department is responsible for identifying and addressing the EMS training needs of the department. This role involves developing lesson plans, presenting educational materials, and conducting certification courses for LAFD personnel. The educator will also maintain records for audits, conduct field care audits, and provide post-incident training, all while representing the department at relevant meetings and conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and analyzes the EMS training needs of the LAFD; researches and develops lesson plans, course curriculum and testing materials.
  • Prepares and presents classroom lectures on various EMS subjects in accordance with State, County, and LAFD continuing education requirements.
  • Provides certification-based courses, including BLS, ACLS, PALS, and PHTLS to LAFD members.
  • Maintains records of continuing education classes and curriculum as mandated by the Local EMS Authority.
  • Conducts audits of field care performed by LAFD personnel for practical application of pre-hospital care modalities.
  • Prepares and provides post-incident training for field members as determined by the EMS Bureau command staff.
  • Represents the LAFD at meetings and conferences related to pre-hospital care and continuing education.

Requirements

  • Completion of California State Fire Marshal Instructor 1A, 1B, 1C certification or National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor Course or two years of full-time experience as the Pre-hospital Care Coordinator of a Los Angeles County Base Station Hospital or one-year experience in education instruction in pre-hospital or emergency services.
  • Possession of a current California Registered Nurse license with one-year full-time experience at a hospital emergency department or a California Paramedic License with two years full-time experience as a 9-1-1 First Responder.
  • A valid California driver's license is required.
