About the position

The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Post-Graduate Training Program at UT Southwestern is an intensive, one-year clinical training program designed for physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses who are seeking specialized training in emergency medicine. This program is open to both new graduates and experienced clinicians, providing a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. The fellowship aims to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in emergency medicine, focusing on comprehensive patient care, technical proficiency, and evidence-based practices. Throughout the program, fellows will conduct and document comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological assessments. They will synthesize data to develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans, which includes ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies. The program emphasizes the importance of collaboration, as fellows will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals to facilitate quality improvement initiatives and participate in research projects. Fellows will also be responsible for providing relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients and their families regarding current care and preventive health measures. The program is designed to foster a supportive learning environment, encouraging fellows to maintain their clinical and technical skills while identifying opportunities for improvement in departmental policies and procedures. This fellowship not only prepares participants for a successful career in emergency medicine but also instills a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and document comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  • Synthesize data and utilize evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
  • Provide relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  • Facilitate/participate in quality-related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings to improve clinical and system practice performance.
  • Collaborate in research projects and protocols; routinely apply evidence-based best practices to patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program and certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Texas Physician Assistant License OR Master's degree in nursing as a nurse practitioner from an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Texas State RN license and APRN license with prescriptive authority authorization.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Must have your TX license by March 15, 2025.
  • One year emergency medicine and/or ICU experience preferred.
