About the position

The Emergency Mental Health Provider (EMHP) is responsible for evaluating patients in need of behavioral health assessments in the emergency department. This role involves conducting psychological evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments and substance use disorder assessments. The EMHP collaborates with staff and providers to ensure appropriate patient care and education on trauma-informed practices.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates age-specific patient care considerations for the population served.
  • Participates in brief psychological evaluation, assessment, and triage for patients with mental health crises or substance use issues.
  • Provides clinical, collateral, and psychosocial information to providers and staff for treatment and disposition determination.
  • Offers clear recommendations or next steps to patients and their support systems for continuity of care.
  • Interacts effectively with diverse individuals of differing cultures and backgrounds.
  • Applies brief evidence-based interventions for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and agitation.
  • Develops and implements appropriate discharge plans for mental health and chemically dependent patients.
  • Identifies barriers to discharge and coordinates with medical staff for safe discharge.
  • Recommends referrals to clinics and community agencies as needed.
  • Documents interventions in patient's chart in compliance with policies.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, social work, counseling).
  • Experience in mental health assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in emergency mental health services.
  • Familiarity with substance use disorder assessments.
  • Training in evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
