About the position

The Emergency Room Technician plays a crucial role in providing basic emergency and trauma care under the supervision of professional medical staff at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals. This position involves assisting with patient care, maintaining emergency room equipment, and supporting medical staff during various procedures. The role is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the emergency department and delivering high-quality care to patients in critical situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assists professional medical staff with patients requiring emergency and trauma techniques.
  • Obtains patient history from patients or witnesses.
  • Takes patient vital signs and reports any abnormalities.
  • Transports patients into emergency and trauma treatment areas.
  • Restrains patients as needed as directed by an M.D. or R.N.
  • Assists patients in dressing and undressing.
  • Provides rapid measures to control patient bleeding.
  • Cleanses wounds and performs topical wound preparations.
  • Sets up procedure area for suturing and other procedures, and assists as required.
  • Applies splints and elastic bandages; fits crutches and instructs patients in crutch walking.
  • Performs visual acuity tests and eye/ear irrigations under supervision.
  • Assists with CPR and other emergency techniques.
  • Operates electrocardiographic and other cardiac monitoring devices.
  • Maintains emergency and trauma room supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans instruments and trays.
  • Assists Medical Staff with minor surgical procedures as required.
  • Organizes specialized trays and assists physician in specialized procedures during traumas.
  • Sets up and assists with specialized GYN procedures as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of hospital acute care or pre-hospital experience such as Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Certified Medical Assistant, or Nursing Assistant.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or CPR certification issued by the American Red Cross.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in medical terminology.
  • Possession of a valid Paramedic License.
  • Possession of a valid Certified Medical Assistant certification.
