About the position

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) at the University at Buffalo (UB) is seeking candidates for the position of Empire Innovation Professor, at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. This role is supported by the SUNY Empire Innovation Program (EIP), which recognizes exceptional scholars with a proven track record of externally funded research. The selected candidate will be a prominent leader in the field of resilient infrastructure, focusing on innovations in the built environment that respond to both natural and man-made hazards, the impacts of climate change, and the challenges posed by aging infrastructure systems. The position emphasizes the importance of system-level analysis, multi-system interdependencies, and risk and reliability analysis of complex systems, particularly in relation to civil infrastructure such as buildings, transportation, energy, water, and wastewater systems, as well as flood protection measures. The Professor of Empire Innovation will be expected to complement the Department's strengths in areas such as extreme events (earthquake, wind, fire), structural/bridge/geotechnical engineering, materials, transportation systems, environmental/water-resources engineering, and environmental sustainability. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in cross-disciplinary collaborations and participate in ongoing initiatives, including the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL), the Center for Computational Research (CCR), and the Institute for Research and Education in Energy, Environment, and Water (RENEW). In addition to conducting research, the successful candidate will develop innovative courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, and maintain an active externally funded research program. The Department values diversity and inclusion, and candidates should demonstrate the ability to operate effectively within a diverse community of students and faculty, contributing to a professional culture that supports equity and inclusion.
