About the position

The Employee Benefits Specialist is a full-time position responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of the employee benefits program within the organization. This role involves coordinating enrollment for various employee benefits and counseling employees on their options and entitlements. The specialist will work closely with principals, division and department heads, as well as employees and their representatives, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the certified and classified benefit and retirement plans available to them. In this position, the Employee Benefits Specialist will coordinate the implementation of retirement benefit compensation programs, which includes the preparation, processing, and maintenance of necessary applications, reports, and records. A key responsibility will be to calculate Early Retirement Benefit Compensation and supervise the distribution of employee benefits information. The specialist will assist employees and applicants in processing enrollments and forms for various benefits, ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed accurately and efficiently. Additionally, the specialist will handle the processing of unemployment insurance and assist with workers' compensation claims related to the loss of benefits. Analyzing employee separations and terminations will also be part of the role, as the specialist will prepare documentation for unemployment hearings and attend these hearings as required. To maintain current knowledge of relevant statutes, regulations, and district policies, the Employee Benefits Specialist will organize and attend benefit workshops and seminars, updating benefit information for employees as needed. Collaboration with Personnel Services and various department heads is essential for the completion of paperwork related to employee benefits, and the specialist will coordinate the implementation of various benefits programs. This position requires a proactive approach to performing related duties as assigned, ensuring that the employee benefits program runs smoothly and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel principals, division and department heads, employees and employee representatives of certified and classified benefit and retirement plans.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the retirement benefit compensation programs including preparation, processing and maintenance of appropriate applications, reports, and records; calculate Early Retirement Benefit Compensation.
  • Supervise the distribution of employee benefits information and assist employees and applicants with processing enrollments and forms for various benefits.
  • Coordinate the processing of unemployment insurance and assist with workers' compensation claims pertaining to loss of benefits.
  • Analyze employee separations and terminations and prepare documentation and information for unemployment hearings; attend hearings as required.
  • Organize and attend benefit workshops and seminars to maintain current knowledge of statutes, regulations, rules and District policies for coverage's pertaining to employee benefits; update benefit information for employees as needed.
  • Coordinate activities with Personnel Services and division and department heads in the information and completion of paperwork related to employee benefits; coordinate the implementation of various benefits.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible employee benefit experience.
  • Knowledge of various employee benefits plans.
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques.
  • Understanding of business and accounting procedures.
  • Familiarity with laws, statutes, regulations, policies and procedures related to benefits.
  • Record-keeping techniques proficiency.
  • Knowledge of District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Understanding of auditing procedures related to employee benefits.
  • Familiarity with hearing procedures and related documents.
