About the position

The Background Investigator position at Constellis involves conducting federal background investigations and preparing detailed reports in compliance with Federal Investigative Standards and other relevant regulations. The investigator will be responsible for working cases throughout the geographic area of responsibility, which includes traveling to various places of employment, residences, and educational institutions. This role requires a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive information while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and guidelines. The investigator will conduct in-person interviews to gather factual information about individuals' backgrounds and character. This includes obtaining information from various personal and record sources to produce comprehensive reports that detail all pertinent facts. The position demands adaptability to changing situations and environments, as well as the ability to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as the investigator will need to maintain professional relationships with managers, representatives at contractor facilities, and various U.S. Government organizations. Additionally, the investigator must be willing to travel within a designated area, typically within 30-50 miles, and may also be required to undertake voluntary temporary duty assignments in other parts of the country for periods of 2-4 weeks. The workload will depend on the availability of cases in the assigned geographic area, and the investigator will be expected to demonstrate problem-solving abilities and proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications and other relevant tools.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct federal background investigations and prepare reports in compliance with Federal Investigative Standards and regulations.
  • Perform in-person, one-on-one subject interviews to gather factual information about individuals' backgrounds and character.
  • Obtain factual information from various personal and record sources to produce comprehensive reports of investigation.
  • Travel throughout the geographic area to conduct investigations at various places of employment, residences, and educational institutions.
  • Engage in regular dialogue with managers and representatives at contractor facilities and government organizations to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Adapt to changing situations and environments and interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills and maintain a professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Manage workload based on the availability of cases in the geographic area.
  • Be willing to undertake voluntary temporary duty assignments in other areas of the country as needed.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Minimum of one year experience as an investigator at the local, state, or federal level, with experience in personnel security screening processes.
  • Possession of a reliable personal vehicle, valid driver's license, and satisfactory driving record.
  • Willingness to travel on temporary duty assignments as needed, by car or plane.
  • Ability to successfully pass background checks and all required training.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret various instructions in oral, written, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficiency in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence effectively.
  • Proficiency in a Microsoft Windows-based operating environment, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet, and Email.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a Background Investigator Training program that meets National Training Standards.
  • Prior experience in background investigations supporting government contracts.
  • An Associate or Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred.
  • Current Top Secret clearance is desirable.
