About the position

The Employee & Labor Relations Manager is a pivotal role responsible for delivering comprehensive Employee Relations (ER) and Labor Relations (LR) services across a designated country or cluster of countries. This position requires a proactive approach to managing operational activities to meet key performance indicators and service levels. The manager will ensure that all grievance, discipline, and policy interpretation requests are handled in a timely and compliant manner, providing expert advice and counsel to ER/LR specialists. The role involves investigating and preparing responses to charges from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and equivalent government agencies in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. In addition to managing sensitive cases and escalations, the Employee & Labor Relations Manager will stay updated on employment and labor practices relevant to the countries they oversee. This includes ensuring that workplace policies are compliant with local laws and notifying management of any regulatory changes. The manager will also be responsible for delivering training to ER professionals, business unit HR representatives, and people leaders, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to handle ER/LR challenges effectively. The role requires leading various ER/LR projects and managing change communications, which includes stakeholder management. The manager will develop the capabilities of their team through frequent training and knowledge-sharing activities, ensuring that all members are informed and skilled in the necessary areas. Additionally, the manager will conduct environmental scans and participate in significant workplace events, such as reductions in force (RIFs) and mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Understanding key performance indicators and operational metrics is critical for managing service delivery and achieving service level agreements. The manager will interpret business metrics to derive insights and recommend continuous improvement opportunities to enhance service provision. This includes reviewing operational processes, policies, and standard operating procedures to introduce key improvement plans. The role also involves preparing written reports and communications to support assigned work, ensuring clarity and compliance in all documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned operational activities to achieve target key performance indicators, operational level agreements, and service levels.
  • Ensure timely and compliant handling of all assigned grievance, discipline, and policy interpretation requests and provide advice and counsel to ER/LR Specialists.
  • Investigate and prepare responses to EEOC and/or equivalent government agency charges in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
  • Drive direct interventions with Managers and employees on the most sensitive cases and escalations.
  • Stay current on country employment and labor practices.
  • Ensure workplace policies are current and in compliance with applicable local laws and notify management of regulatory changes.
  • Deliver ER/LR training for ER professionals, BUHR, and People Leaders.
  • Lead ER/LR projects and deliver ER/LR change and communications work, including stakeholder management.
  • Develop staff capability, knowledge, skills, and understanding of the country or countries and Work Locations by organizing frequent functional/operational training and knowledge sharing activities for team members.
  • Conduct environmental scans and participate in significant workplace events such as planning and execution of RIFs, M&As, etc.
  • Understand the Key Performance Indicators and operational metrics critical to managing service delivery to achieve Service Level Agreements and meet customer service standards.
  • Interpret and translate business metrics into insights and make recommendations on continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare written reports, communications, and other documents supporting assigned work.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A minimum of 6 years progressive HR experience with a concentration in Employee Relations, Labor Relations, and HR Generalist experience.
  • Strong leadership skills with an understanding and appreciation for regional differences.
  • Proven success in establishing, managing, and empowering a global virtual team.
  • Ability to establish a culture focused on speed, accountability, and continuous improvement while building employee-centric repeatable and sustainable processes.
  • Relationship management, coaching, and collaboration skills with leaders at all levels and key stakeholders.
  • Experience in shaping solutions and driving business results with strong communication and collaborative partnership skills.
  • Experience using Service Center technologies, ticket management, knowledge management, telephony/IVR, document management, etc.
  • Experience in development and reporting of HR analytics to manage performance and drive data-based decisions for HR and the organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems and applications (e.g., ERP, HRIS, Applicant Management Systems, etc.).

  • Experience in Pharma, medical device, biotech, or healthcare industry is preferred.
