About the position

The Employee Relations Manager (ERM) at Public Storage serves as a trusted adviser and critical partner, responsible for coaching employees and leaders on various employee relation matters, including conflict resolution and performance deficiencies. This role requires a solid understanding of Public Storage's policies, culture, and core values, enabling the ERM to conduct investigations and make informed recommendations to resolve issues and support actions that drive positive outcomes. As a subject matter expert, the ERM will identify risks and gaps in employee relations, create, audit, and sustain positive workplace relations programs, and design and conduct training that promotes best practices. The ERM will leverage climate surveys, exit interviews, and investigations to provide advice and counsel to leaders, ensuring fair and consistent resolutions to employee relations issues and disciplinary actions. This position involves working reactively on crisis-oriented situations while proactively mitigating future risks. The ERM will be comfortable presenting to leaders and communicating with frontline employees, demonstrating strong project management skills and experience in handling employment investigations, performance management, and employee engagement. Key responsibilities include conducting investigations, identifying and driving programs to foster constructive employee relations, gathering and analyzing metrics to develop recommendations, facilitating climate surveys, educating HR and field leaders on employee relation topics, managing the Ethics Point and Ask HR Hotline, partnering with managers on performance matters, evaluating and improving HR practices, designing training sessions, and overseeing legal document gathering related to subpoenas and litigation. This role is essential in supporting Human Resource initiatives by creating and editing policies, developing talking points, and ensuring the organization maintains a fair, respectful, and consistent approach to employee relations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations related to employee relations issues and keep key partners informed of progress.
  • Identify and drive programs to foster constructive employee relations.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret metrics to develop recommendations and strategies for positive employee relations.
  • Facilitate climate surveys and support leaders in developing action plans based on survey results.
  • Educate HR and Field Leaders on employee relation topics, communicating trends and risk factors.
  • Manage the Ethics Point and Ask HR Hotline, assigning cases based on workload and complexity.
  • Partner with key collaborators across the business and Employee Experience function.
  • Lead complex and high-volume employee situations related to performance management and provide mentorship.
  • Partner with managers on performance matters and assist with corrective action and disciplinary actions.
  • Evaluate and improve existing HR practices to introduce new perspectives and processes.
  • Design and drive training sessions to meet employee needs and business objectives.
  • Support HR initiatives by creating and editing policies and developing best practices.
  • Oversee legal subpoena and litigation document gathering and coordinate interviews.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience managing employment investigations, performance management, and engagement.
  • Solid working knowledge of employee and labor relations principles and practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local labor and employment laws and regulations.
  • Experience leading multiple, concurrent, high-priority employee situations with timely execution.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze HR issues and provide effective solutions both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with Navex Global, Workday, and EthicsPoint.
