About the position

The EMS Operations Specialist (EMS2) at San Juan Regional Medical Center plays a crucial role in supporting operations for both critical and non-emergent calls. This position is designed for individuals who are not only skilled paramedics but also possess leadership qualities to guide and mentor others in the EMS team. The Operations Specialist will work either from an assigned medic station or as a stand-alone medic in a chase vehicle, ensuring that all operational protocols are followed and that the team is prepared for any situation that may arise. In this role, the Operations Specialist will act as an assistant supervisor, collaborating closely with the Operations Supervisor and stepping into their duties in their absence. This includes overseeing EMS personnel and equipment during major responses, managing day-to-day operations, and making critical decisions regarding the best methods to employ in various situations. The Operations Specialist is also responsible for maintaining departmental discipline, handling grievances, and ensuring that all personnel conduct themselves in accordance with the organization's values. Additionally, the Operations Specialist will provide field training to new paramedics, ensuring that seasoned paramedics remain current with their skills through refresher and remedial training. Quality assurance measures are a key component of this role, as the Operations Specialist must ensure that all training and operational standards are met. Responsibilities

  • Support operations in responding to critical calls and non-emergent situations.
  • Act as an assistant supervisor in conjunction with the Operations Supervisor.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance through field training for new paramedics.
  • Ensure all Quality Assurance Measures are met.
  • Oversee EMS personnel and equipment at the scene of major responses in the absence of the EMS Operations Supervisor.
  • Handle grievances from officers and EMTs/Medics.
  • Maintain departmental discipline and conduct of personnel.
  • Assign personnel and equipment to duties as required by service needs.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and directing operations to ensure readiness and proficiency.
  • Maintain scheduling for public relations and staffing for special events.
  • Provide en route communication and resource assignments during responses.
  • Manage on-scene EMS operations and serve as Incident Commander at major incidents.
  • Support additional equipment and manpower at major incident scenes.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking ambulances after incidents.
  • Provide backup to on-duty ambulances and evaluate operations and personnel on-scene.
  • Respond to serious calls to observe and assist ambulance crews.
  • Cover openings on ALS units as needed.
  • Provide oversight for preceptees and EMS students, including regular meetings and quality assurance methods.
  • Report to the Training Coordinator and QA Coordinator regarding field training and quality assurance matters.
  • Coordinate and instruct EMS New Hire Orientation and provide on-shift training for co-workers.
  • Maintain high professional standards through regular professional development.
  • Attend strategy and operational meetings with other supervisors and staff as needed.
  • Identify operational needs and assist the operational supervisor as necessary.
  • Assist with new-hire orientation and annual evaluation processes.
  • Log daily truck checks and lead system Safety Huddles.

Requirements

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a Lead Paramedic and Preceptor.
  • New Mexico Paramedic License.
  • Maintain a proficient rating or higher on quarterly performance measures.
  • Positive recommendation from an EMS Supervisor and Medical Director.
  • Ability to complete an approved Leadership Development Course.
  • Must obtain ICS 300 and 400 within a year.
