About the position

Gundersen Health System is seeking part-time Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to join our dedicated Emergency Services and Onalaska Urgent Care teams. As an EMT, you will play a crucial role in saving lives by providing high-quality care to over 65,000 patients of all ages annually. This position requires a high degree of clinical and professional aptitude, as you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Providers, RNs, Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists, Health Unit Coordinators, and Social Workers. Our Emergency Services department is a Level II ACS-verified Trauma Center, known for its high-energy, patient-centered environment. We provide 24-hour access to laboratory, X-ray, and surgical services, and we are recognized as a Stroke Center and a Chest Pain Center with 24/7 capabilities. In this role, you will assist in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with established policies and protocols. You will be expected to demonstrate effective communication skills, maintain accurate documentation, and perform technical skills in the care and treatment of patients with multiple injuries. The position offers part-time hours, with a commitment of 40 hours biweekly (0.5 FTE), primarily during mid-shifts (3p-11p) with every other weekend and holiday rotation. Starting pay is competitive, beginning at $17.24/hr, with generous differentials for shifts, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities

  • Assists and collaborates with the RN and other members of the healthcare team on delivering patient care in an emergency setting.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with the healthcare team members and provides accurate, concise documentation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of monitor/defibrillators including performing defibrillation, pacing, and cardioversion.
  • Responds to Code Blues and CRT throughout the institution and provides monitoring, defibrillating and other skilled measures as indicated.
  • Works as a member of the trauma team in Emergency Services, performing technical skills in care and treatment of patients with multiple injuries.
  • Creates and maintains sterile field and assists providers with sterile procedures.
  • Provides specialty care services including, but not limited to EKG's and blood glucose testing.
  • Achieves and maintains competency on EMT checklist in addition to maintaining department readiness to ensure availability of supplies.
  • Works with EMT students and new orientees to supervise their education experience and delivery of optimal patient care.
  • Initiates percutaneous lines on appropriate patients without supervision, including site selection and catheter selection.
  • Responsible for collection of DOT and non-DOT specimens for drug testing and conducting breath alcohol testing during off hours.
  • Provides discharge instructions for case/splint care and maintenance, Foley care and maintenance, and provides crutch/cane/walker training.
  • Provides direction to ensure accurate ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrates role accountability by adhering to Gundersen Lutheran mission statements, policies, and confidentiality statement.
  • Provides daily checks and maintains logs of emergency medical equipment and supplies.
  • Witnesses waste of controlled substances with authorized staff in the state of Wisconsin.
  • Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.
  • Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.
  • Ensures patient safety.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Valid NREMT or WI EMT-B certification.
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification.
  • Prior work experience in an emergency or pre-hospital setting is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year prior EMT or direct patient care experience.
