About the position

Gundersen Health System is seeking part-time Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to join our dedicated Emergency Services and Onalaska Urgent Care teams. As an EMT, you will play a crucial role in saving lives by providing high-quality care to over 65,000 patients of all ages annually. This position requires a high degree of clinical and professional aptitude, as you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Providers, RNs, Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists, Health Unit Coordinators, and Social Workers. Our Emergency Services department is a Level II ACS-verified Trauma Center, known for its high-energy, patient-centered environment. The facility is equipped with 45 patient exam rooms, including ten Urgent Care rooms, five resuscitation/trauma/critical care rooms, and three dedicated Behavioral Health rooms, ensuring comprehensive care for all patients. With 24-hour access to laboratory, X-ray, and surgical services, we are also recognized as a Stroke Center and a Chest Pain Center, providing critical interventions around the clock. In this role, you will be expected to assist and collaborate with RNs and other healthcare team members in delivering patient care in emergency settings. You will demonstrate effective communication skills, maintain accurate documentation, and perform technical skills such as defibrillation and monitoring during critical situations. The position involves working night shifts (7 PM to 7 AM) with a rotation of every third weekend and holiday, and you will be compensated competitively based on your experience, with additional differentials for shifts and holidays. This is a part-time position, requiring 48 hours biweekly (0.6 FTE), with training provided to ensure you are well-prepared for your responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and collaborate with the RN and other healthcare team members on delivering patient care in an emergency setting.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with healthcare team members and provide accurate, concise documentation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of monitor/defibrillators, including performing defibrillation, pacing, and cardioversion.
  • Respond to Code Blues and CRT throughout the institution and provide monitoring, defibrillating, and other skilled measures as indicated.
  • Work as a member of the trauma team in Emergency Services, performing technical skills in care and treatment of patients with multiple injuries.
  • Create and maintain sterile field and assist providers with sterile procedures.
  • Provide specialty care services including EKGs and blood glucose testing (not done in Urgent Care).
  • Achieve and maintain competency on EMT checklist and maintain department readiness to ensure availability of supplies.
  • Work with EMT students and new orientees to supervise their education experience and delivery of optimal patient care.
  • Initiate percutaneous lines on appropriate patients without supervision, including site selection and maintenance of appropriate flow rate.
  • Responsible for collection of DOT and non-DOT specimens for drug testing and conducting breath alcohol testing during off hours.
  • Provide discharge instructions for case/splint care and maintenance, Foley care and maintenance, and provide crutch/cane/walker training.
  • Provide direction to ensure accurate ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrate role accountability by adhering to Gundersen Lutheran mission statements, policies, and confidentiality statement.
  • Provide daily checks and maintain logs of emergency medical equipment and supplies.
  • Witness waste of controlled substances with authorized staff in the state of Wisconsin.
  • Adhere to regular and predictable attendance.
  • Personally interact, engage with, and care for patients.
  • Ensure patient safety.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Valid NREMT or WI EMT-B certification.
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification.
  • Prior work experience in an emergency or pre-hospital setting is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves
