About the position

Gundersen Health System is seeking a casual on-call Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to join the Winona Urgent Care team. This role is crucial in providing high-quality care to patients of all ages in a fast-paced environment. EMTs will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver patient care, perform assessments, assist in medical examinations, and support treatment functions. The position offers flexible scheduling and the opportunity to make a significant impact on patient recovery and care.

Responsibilities

  • Administer patient assessments including physical conditions such as muscle strength and coordination.
  • Assist during medical examinations and treatments, including suturing and wound care.
  • Prepare and administer treatments including detoxification and naloxone training.
  • Collaborate with the RN and healthcare team to deliver patient care in an emergency setting.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and provide accurate documentation.
  • Use monitor/defibrillators and respond to Code Blues and CRT throughout the institution.
  • Work as a member of the trauma team, performing technical skills in patient care.
  • Create and maintain sterile fields and assist with sterile procedures.
  • Provide specialty care services including EKGs and blood glucose testing.
  • Supervise EMT students and new orientees in their education experience.
  • Initiate percutaneous lines on appropriate patients without supervision.
  • Collect DOT and non-DOT specimens for drug testing and conduct breath alcohol testing as needed.
  • Provide discharge instructions for case/splint care and maintenance.
  • Ensure accurate ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain logs of emergency medical equipment and supplies.
  • Witness waste of controlled substances with authorized staff as required.
  • Adhere to regular and predictable attendance and ensure patient safety.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT).
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Minnesota (EMT-MN) certification if working in Minnesota.
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers certification.
  • Prior work experience in an emergency or pre-hospital setting is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year prior EMT or direct patient care experience.
