About the position

The Department of Human Services is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Energy Assistance Worker for the seasonal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Helpline. This role is crucial in providing support to citizens in need during the winter months, ensuring that residents have access to the necessary resources to stay warm and safe. As an Energy Assistance Worker, you will be part of a supportive team that is committed to making a positive impact in the community. Your work will involve assessing applicants' eligibility for LIHEAP benefits through effective communication and empathy, particularly for those facing challenging circumstances. In this position, you will operate within a call center environment, handling incoming calls and emails from applicants. You will utilize your strong verbal and written communication skills to gather information, apply relevant policies and procedures, and determine eligibility for energy assistance. A significant part of your role will involve guiding applicants through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Access to Social Services (COMPASS) website or mobile app, ensuring they can navigate the system effectively. Additionally, you will frequently use computer applications to interact with clients and collaborate with Department of Human Services personnel. Your responsibilities will also include connecting citizens with additional community resources that may enhance their LIHEAP benefits or provide further support. This position offers the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of helping your community while working in a controlled office environment. The seasonal employment runs approximately from October to April, with the possibility of starting as early as September and lasting until June. The work schedule is full-time, requiring 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a 60-minute lunch break. Overtime and travel may be required based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess information and apply policies to determine eligibility for LIHEAP benefits.
  • Handle calls and emails from applicants with empathy and objectivity.
  • Guide callers in navigating the COMPASS website or mobile app.
  • Connect citizens with additional community resources for support.
  • Utilize computer applications while interacting with clients and personnel.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in general office work that included interviewing the public; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
