About the position

The Energy Market Manager - Wholesale Market is responsible for overseeing the delivery of reliable wholesale energy to ERCOT by managing Austin Energy's portfolio. This role involves managing a team of technical, professional, and administrative staff, and includes responsibilities such as fuel procurement, dispatching, risk management, and representing Austin Energy's interests to various boards and commissions. The position is critical to the operations of the City of Austin and may require working in various conditions to ensure essential services are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a staff consisting of professional, technical, and administrative employees.
  • Deliver reliable wholesale energy supplies to Austin Energy at competitive prices.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate complex programs including generation dispatch and energy risk management.
  • Manage sections including energy marketing, market systems development, and load forecasting.
  • Oversee analysis and forecasting of electric power and related commodity prices.
  • Develop and implement wholesale energy supply and marketing strategies.
  • Manage O&M and capital budgets, work plans, and achievement of objectives.
  • Represent the City of Austin and Austin Energy interests to boards, commissions, and councils.
  • Serve as Director, Energy Market and Operations in their absence.
  • Responsible for crucial decisions with significant financial impact on multi-million dollar budgets.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in a related field, with two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Strong data analysis skills.
  • Experience in managerial accounting and budgeting.
  • Supervising experience and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of wholesale fuel and electric markets.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing market strategies for power portfolios.
  • Experience with hedging philosophies for public power entities.
  • Experience leading teams of marketers and analysts.
  • Knowledge of Day Ahead (DA) timeline and Fuel Supply for Austin Energy.
