About the position

The Energy Project Engineer Intern position at Southland Industries is designed for students pursuing a degree in engineering or construction management. This internship offers a hands-on experience in the Design/Build construction industry, where interns will assist project managers in coordinating projects, managing budgets, and supporting construction teams. The role emphasizes skill development in design, estimating, construction processes, and project management, providing a pathway to potential full-time employment opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a project manager in coordinating a project using necessary engineering, labor, equipment, materials, tools, and subcontracted services.
  • Track labor and budget feedback.
  • Procure equipment and subcontractors.
  • Manage document control processes.
  • Coordinate design, trade, and subcontractor activities.
  • Assist in budget analysis, cost and margin projections, and estimating project changes and impacts.
  • Help develop and manage project schedules.
  • Assist in managing change orders and assembling submittal packages.
  • Support the construction team as needed.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Safety Sciences, or related fields.
  • Interest in technical courses such as fluids, heat transfer, CM scheduling, and finance.
  • Strong work ethic and initiative to complete tasks.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to be resourceful.
  • Problem-solving skills with limited support and a positive attitude in challenging situations.
  • Goal-oriented with a collaborative spirit and strong active listening skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with engineering drawings and construction processes.
  • Familiarity with Requests for Information (RFI) and submittal processes.
