About the position

The Business Development Manager at Veolia North America is a pivotal role responsible for identifying and developing long-term, integrated energy services contracts. This position requires a proactive approach to lead the pursuit of new business opportunities by establishing and nurturing strong relationships with both existing and potential clients. The manager will act as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs are met and that they receive tailored solutions that align with their objectives. In this role, the Business Development Manager will be tasked with identifying potential customers and developing relationships with key decision-makers within client organizations. This involves assessing opportunities for collaboration and growth. The manager will also manage and participate in the preparation of proposals, pricing strategies, and presentations to customers, ensuring that all materials reflect a strategic approach to developing new projects. Additionally, the role includes leading negotiations with clients, which encompasses the preparation of contracts and the structuring of financing solutions. The manager will oversee internal development activities, including technical audits conducted by Veolia's development engineers, and will serve as a liaison with various internal teams such as operations, finance, legal, and risk management throughout the sales process. A critical aspect of this position is to assess competitor strengths, weaknesses, and strategic directions to maintain a competitive edge in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Identify potential customers and develop relationships with key decision makers in client organizations.
  • Act as the primary focal point with the client.
  • Manage and participate in proposal preparation, pricing, and presentations to customers.
  • Formulate and write technical proposals reflecting the strategic approach towards developing a new project.
  • Lead negotiations with clients, including preparation of contracts and structuring of financing solutions.
  • Manage internal development activities including technical audits by Veolia development engineers.
  • Serve as a close liaison with other members of the Veolia team throughout the sales process.
  • Assess competitor strengths, weaknesses, and strategic direction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3 - 5 years' experience in business development within the Energy & Utilities or Engineering Services industry.
  • Proven experience working in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic markets.
  • Knowledge of Energy Performance Contracting, Microgrids / Distributed Energy, Smart Buildings, or related consultative sales.
  • Working knowledge of building infrastructure systems, especially HVAC and hydronic systems.
  • Hands-on project experience working directly with clients.
  • Thorough working knowledge of financial aspects of business, creating financial models, and using database platforms.
  • Ability to build rapport with clients and listen to their needs to create customized client solutions.
  • Proficient in business development strategies, strong negotiation skills, and driven to achieve results.
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Adaptability to changes in the business climate.

Nice-to-haves

  • P.E., CEM, LEED, and other industry-relevant certifications/trainings are a plus.
  • An advanced degree is desired but not required.
