About the position

The Energy Specialist position at the World Bank Group focuses on supporting the M300 initiative in the Western and Central Africa region. This role involves coordinating energy access programs, providing analytical support, and facilitating collaboration among various stakeholders to enhance energy access and promote sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in aligning initiatives with the World Bank's objectives and will be involved in high-level briefings and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and integrate inputs from AFW energy teams on products and activities.
  • Act as a point person for M300 related activities for the AFW team, ensuring effective inclusion of activities across the two energy units in AFW.
  • Support the preparation of briefing materials for AFE and AFW INF Regional Directors and other senior management on M300.
  • Utilizing the M300 tracking tool and dashboards, develop analytics of the energy access portfolio and pipeline, in close collaboration with ongoing initiatives.
  • Lead on the successful implementation of M300 events, such as side events during COP, Annual and Spring Meetings.
  • Support M300 coordinator in keeping track of and coordinating the various technical workstreams, including large flagship events, national energy compacts, and monitoring of M300 progress.
  • Support the M300 partnership specialist in nurturing and creating effective cooperation to advance the M300 agenda.
  • Advise on policy and investment requirements for achieving M300 targets, including coordination and inputs to country and regional energy compacts.
  • Support the preparation of analytical and advisory reports and studies on Universal access, clean cooking, utility distribution, Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE), climate change, energy efficiency, and potentially other regional energy programs, as well as inputs to report management.
  • Work on other corporate assignments as needed.
  • Other tasks as needed and agreed with the RDs.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in engineering, energy planning/economics, business administration, or equivalent areas relevant for energy sector development.
  • At least 5 years of combined experience in the World Bank, other international institutions and/or companies, government agencies, and/or power sector utilities with demonstrated track record of successful engagement with relevant developmental programs and projects.
  • Demonstrates proven understanding of energy policies, technologies or strategies, private sector participation, utility reform, and institutional development needed to support development and for the success of project and analytical work.
  • Experience developing and implementing national electricity access programs.
  • Experience in playing key roles in policy dialogue with clients and stakeholders, including private sector.
  • Experience working on/with World Bank or other International Financial Institutions (IFIs) lending and non-lending operations is desirable.
  • Demonstrates active listening skills and the ability to influence the audience (such as counterparts in government, international partner organizations, academia, and Bank colleagues, senior staff and managers).
