The Engineer 1 position at BWX Technologies, specifically within the Nuclear Fuel Services division, is designed for recent graduates or individuals with limited experience in engineering. This role involves routine engineering assignments that apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria under the guidance of a manager or an experienced engineer. The primary objective of these assignments is to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, allowing the engineer to gain practical experience in the field. The work is conducted under close supervision, ensuring that the engineer receives the necessary support and guidance to navigate any unusual or complex problems that may arise during their assignments. In this role, the engineer will evaluate various situations and select appropriate engineering techniques and procedures, making minor modifications as necessary. The assignments are structured with clear objectives, requiring careful planning and investigation of a limited number of possibilities. The engineer's work will be reviewed for sound judgment and compliance with contract technical requirements, as well as adherence to division policies and procedures. Specific instructions will be provided for each assignment, detailing objectives, complex features, and potential solutions. The engineer will also be expected to prepare written reports, drawings, sketches, and technical documents, including Technical Basis, Change Requests, Equivalencies, and Set Points. Additionally, the engineer will design and conduct tests or experiments, evaluate and correlate data, and organize and plan their work effectively. A solid understanding of manufacturing technology, technical process specifications, engineering policies and procedures, quality control procedures, departmental goals, customer needs, and contract requirements will be essential for success in this position. The role also emphasizes the development of skills necessary to interpret technical specifications, conduct meetings, and interact with customers, vendors, and other department representatives, as well as prepare time and cost estimates.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for routine engineering assignments applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria under guidance of a manager or experienced engineer.
  • Evaluates situations, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making minor modifications.
  • Prepares written reports, drawings/sketches, technical documents (Technical Basis, Change Requests, Equivalencies, Set Points, etc.).
  • Designs and conducts tests or experiments, evaluates and correlates data, organizes and plans work.
  • Develops ability to interpret technical specifications, conduct meetings, deal with customers, vendors, and other department representatives, prepare time and cost estimates.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering. No experience required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multifunctional team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
