About the position

We are looking for an Engineer II to join our growing team of data experts at JCPenney. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines, ensuring timely delivery of data to our cross-functional teams, and supporting reporting and analytics initiatives. The Engineer will collaborate closely with analysts, report developers, architects, data scientists, and other engineers on various data initiatives. A key aspect of this position involves designing our next generation of data platform architecture to meet increasing data demands. In this role, you will partner with Product and IT stakeholders to understand business needs, gather data requirements, and translate them into structured data models, ensuring data consistency, integrity, and optimal performance. You will design, develop, and maintain the systems and infrastructure necessary for the collection, storage, processing, and analysis of large volumes of data. Collaboration with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and Business Analytics users will be essential to provide access to clean and organized data for various business purposes. Additionally, you will work with Enterprise and Solution Architects to implement continuous improvement processes that protect, govern, automate, and scale our data platform. Participation in data governance initiatives and contributing to maintaining data dictionaries and documentation will facilitate effective data management and analysis. You will also be responsible for break/fix support (triage and resolution) of data systems, applications, and processes in production and in lower environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product and IT stakeholders to understand business needs and gather data requirements.
  • Translate data requirements into structured data models ensuring data consistency and integrity.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines for the collection, storage, processing, and analysis of large volumes of data.
  • Collaborate with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and Business Analytics users to provide access to clean and organized data.
  • Work with Enterprise and Solution Architects to implement continuous improvement processes for data governance and automation.
  • Participate in data governance initiatives and maintain data dictionaries and documentation.
  • Provide break/fix support for data systems, applications, and processes.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role.
  • Bachelor's degree in technology or a related field.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development processes and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of data governance processes including lineage, profiling, classification, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with data engineering techniques for managing structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Working knowledge of distributed event streaming data platforms (Tibco, Kafka).
  • Familiarity with microservices and containerized applications (EKS, Docker).
  • Experience with big data tools (Cloudera, Hadoop, Spark, Map Reduce, NiFi, Sqoop, YARN).
  • Experience with AWS cloud services (S3, EC2, EMR, Redshift, Glue, CloudWatch, Lambda, Athena).
  • Experience with CI/CD data pipeline orchestration tools (Jenkins, Airflow).
  • Experience in data modeling and database schemas (normalized, flat, star, snowflake, etc.).
  • Proficient in query languages (SQL, Hive, Python).
