About the position

The Engineer 6 (DCL) position focuses on the design, maintenance, and rehabilitation of electrical and mechanical systems for movable bridges, tunnels, and related facilities. This role serves as a departmental authority and expert in engineering practices, ensuring compliance with state and federal standards while managing significant budgets for repair projects. The position requires a blend of technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines to maintain operational efficiency and safety.

Responsibilities

• Design repairs and rehabilitations of systems for statewide movable bridges, tunnels, and facilities.
• Develop plans, specifications, and construction estimates for complex systems related to movable bridges and tunnels.
• Co-manage the annual state-funded Facility Program Major Repairs budget and the federally-funded Highway Priority Program/Operational Efficiency-Movable Bridge program.
• Review and approve equipment submittals and shop drawings related to designed work.
• Provide engineering support during construction, including field inspections and responding to contractor inquiries.
• Perform final field inspections of new or rehabilitated movable bridges, tunnels, and facilities to ensure compliance with contract documents.
• Assist in the development of mechanical and electrical consultant contracts and review construction documents prepared by private consultants.
• Design systems for stormwater pump stations and assist with emergency inspections and repairs of movable bridge structures.
• Maintain the Department's design and construction standards related to systems for movable bridges.

Requirements

• Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.
• Two years of licensed engineering experience or six years of professional engineering experience, including four years in electrical or mechanical engineering.
• Experience in design or maintenance of electrical or mechanical systems such as pumping systems, HVAC, and control systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree in engineering (substitutes for one year of experience).
• Ph.D. in engineering (substitutes for two years of experience).
• Experience with AASHTO Movable Highway Bridge Design Specifications.
