About the position

The Automation Engineer at Southwire Company, LLC will play a crucial role in designing, budgeting, and managing the installation of engineered control systems for both capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives. This position is integral to the modernization of plant operations, ensuring that systems are not only efficient but also aligned with the company's commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. The Automation Engineer will provide technical assistance to plant electronic technicians, engineers, and modernization teams, focusing on diagnosing electrical malfunctions and determining necessary repairs. This role is pivotal in engineering solutions that eliminate the root causes of malfunctions impacting Connected Enterprise platforms. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Automation Engineer will promote safety across all project job sites, ensuring that safety protocols are adhered to at all times. The role requires versatility in ladder logic and various PLC programming languages, along with a solid understanding of field control devices such as motors, relays, and switches. Project management skills are essential, as the engineer will be involved in budgeting, design, installation management, and spare parts procurement. The engineer will also be responsible for developing new PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications to enhance manufacturing processes and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The Automation Engineer will actively research, evaluate, and implement new manufacturing methods and equipment, contributing to the company's goal of achieving world-class manufacturing capabilities. This includes designing, developing, maintaining, and modifying instrumentation and control systems, as well as participating in the setup and commissioning of these systems. Training team members on new systems and processes will also be a key aspect of this role, ensuring that all affected personnel are well-equipped to operate and maintain the new technologies introduced.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety in the workplace and on all project job sites.
  • Versatile in ladder logic and various PLC programming languages.
  • Working knowledge and troubleshooting of field control devices (motors, relays, switches, photoeyes, etc.).
  • Project management which may include budgeting, design, installation management, spare parts procurement, etc.
  • Develop new and modify existing PLC, HMI, and/or SCADA applications, interfaces, or embedded control systems to improve and enhance manufacturing processes.
  • Procure and provide asset and auxiliary values to support site OEE objectives.
  • Review Connected Enterprise platform to identify potential issues with system performance.
  • Research, evaluate, develop, and implement new manufacturing methods and equipment to provide world-class manufacturing capability and competence.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and modify instrumentation and control systems.
  • Proactively strive to maintain, add, and improve information sources supporting Connected Enterprise.
  • Participate in the setup and commissioning of control systems and train affected team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Specialized Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 5+ years of experience in the field.
  • Expertise in Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell PLC Programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD.
