About the position

The Engineer, Distribution System Planning position at Eversource Energy is a hybrid role focused on the planning and design of distribution lines and substations within the electric power system. The role requires extensive technical expertise and involves leading projects, conducting planning studies, and representing the company in regulatory matters. The position emphasizes collaboration with various departments and stakeholders to ensure a reliable distribution system and effective communication with customers and management.

Responsibilities

  • Identify Distribution System problems involving multiple feeders and substations, lead and conduct scenario-based planning studies, evaluate alternatives, and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Develop medium (2-5 year) and long (5+ year) range distribution plans involving load relief, capacity, and asset-related issues.
  • Prepare contingency studies for distribution networks including N-1 and N-2 analysis.
  • Propose new distribution overhead (OH) and underground (UG) feeders.
  • Perform area-wide voltage and power factor studies, recommending findings to distribution engineering.
  • Work with the DER planning team on wide area distribution impacts of distributed generation.
  • Lead or conduct load forecast planning studies to determine distribution loads used in planning studies.
  • Partner with other departments to prepare economic analysis for complex projects; recommend the allocation of costs for facilities used jointly with other utilities.
  • Recommend project priorities for the capital construction program financial review.
  • Conduct and/or manage studies required to support the need for facilities, evaluate alternatives, and prepare reports and testimony for regulatory applications.
  • Provide leadership in coordinating multiple cross-functional groups and guidance for engineers.
  • Prepare distribution-related documentation and/or testimony to support regulatory filings.
  • Communicate effectively with distribution customers regarding proposed facilities.
  • Present recommendations and/or results to all levels of management as appropriate.
  • Represent the department and the company on various committees.
  • Recommend the development and/or changes of criteria and standards for distribution planning.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Power Technology Engineering required, Electric Power Systems preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in planning, design, and operations related to distribution line and distribution substation facilities.
  • Working knowledge of complex computer simulation techniques used in distribution planning.
  • Knowledge of techniques for planning the expansion of distribution lines and substation facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Advanced knowledge of distribution line design and operating practices.
  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation.
  • Excellent team skills and effective interpersonal skills.

  • Master's degree in Engineering preferred.
  • Recognized by others in New England as a technical expert.
