About the position

The Engineer - Electric System Engineering position at Avangrid Service Company is a critical role within the Projects Organization, primarily focused on overseeing a portfolio of projects related to electric delivery infrastructure in New York. The engineer will ensure that all projects comply with regulatory requirements and company standards, maintaining consistency throughout the project lifecycle. This role involves significant responsibility for the design, review, and approval of protection and control equipment designs, ensuring they meet applicable codes and standards such as NESC, FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, and NY PSC. The Senior Electrical Engineer will report directly to the Unit Manager of Customer Funded Development and will collaborate closely with cross-functional project teams to support project needs as directed by the Project Manager and Unit Manager. This position requires a strong engineering background, particularly in electric transmission and substation protection systems, and the ability to perform engineering calculations and analyses. The engineer will also be responsible for reviewing and approving detailed protection system designs, including settings developed both internally and by engineering consultants, and overseeing the quality aspects of engineering work. In addition to technical responsibilities, the engineer will participate in collaborative analyses and reviews of projects, studies, and best practices with engineering peers. They will also be involved in reviewing large customer interconnections and distributed energy resource interconnections to substations, transmission circuits, and distribution circuits. The role may require providing engineering support during construction and testing phases, as well as assisting during storm restoration efforts when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design, estimating, and analysis of the electric transmission and substation protection systems in support of capital and customer funded projects.
  • Develop engineering conceptual designs for substations and transmission line projects.
  • Participate in detailed design, performing engineering reviews, calculations, and recommending drawings or system improvements according to standards or international codes.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis.
  • Review and approve detailed protection system designs, including settings, developed both internally and by engineering consultants.
  • Review and approve work of engineering contractors providing automation engineering and design services to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Oversee quality aspects of engineering, including compliance with design standards and accuracy of documentation, field analysis and reporting, and test data.
  • Lead collaborative analysis and review of projects, studies, and best practices with engineering peers.
  • Review large customer interconnections and distributed energy resource interconnections to substations, transmission circuits, and distribution circuits.
  • Provide engineering support during construction and testing and commissioning phases when required.

Requirements

  • 4 years of experience in Engineering or 2 years of experience as P&C Electrical Engineer.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering / Technology.
  • Professional Engineer or ability to obtain certification preferred.
  • Experience with power system protection applications such as ASPEN OneLiner and ASPEN Line Database.
  • Knowledge of Interconnection Standards such as IEEE-1547.
  • Knowledge of FERC/NERC/NPCC and state regulations such as NERC PRC standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of electric substations and transmission systems planning, operations, and/or protection.
  • Knowledge of running and analyzing electric power load flows.
  • Experience utilizing AutoCAD and other engineering tools.
  • Experience working with contractors.
