About the position

Engineers at National Grid are essential in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electric transmission and distribution systems. This role involves developing standards, designing control systems, managing assets, and integrating new technologies. Engineers collaborate across various departments to support the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems, contributing to strategic business objectives and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and contribute to the development of National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design standards and guidelines.
  • Provide technical support to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
  • Review technical documents such as single lines, elementaries, and manufacturers' drawings.
  • Research and support the adoption of new technologies for the substation business.
  • Conduct analytical studies for transmission system expansion and interconnection of new generation.
  • Perform thermal capability analysis for transmission lines and equipment.
  • Conduct power flow and stability studies for Transmission Planning.
  • Assess the performance of the sub-Transmission and Distribution system and develop modernization plans.
  • Provide technical support for the application, operation, and maintenance of the electric transmission and distribution system.
  • Oversee external Design Consultant deliverables for Distribution Line Projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or Engineering (PE) license is preferred for some roles.
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in transmission, distribution, or substation engineering.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with PSS/E, MUST, ASPEN, and/or PowerGem TARA.
  • Knowledge of power systems and protection system operation.
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment with FERC Order 1000.

  • Salary range of $101,000 - $119,000
