About the position

As an Engineer I in Grid Operations at Alliant Energy, you will engage in a variety of engineering tasks aimed at supporting the construction, operations, and maintenance of essential energy infrastructure. This role involves working under the guidance of experienced engineers to ensure the reliability and efficiency of generation, transmission, and distribution systems. You will contribute to the seamless functioning of these systems, which are crucial for powering communities, while also focusing on your professional growth and development in the engineering field.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety rules and practices to identify and correct unsafe conditions for self and team.
  • Identify problems and solutions and make safety suggestions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Learn basic customer needs and expectations and strive to identify system problems and solutions with guidance.
  • Apply regulatory and organizational engineering standards, processes, and procedures to solve limited scope problems.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of electric utility system operations and maintenance practices with a focus on reliability and resiliency.
  • Make low-risk decisions involving direct application of technical knowledge with guidance from a supervisor.
  • Communicate and build relationships with employees, business unit stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Discuss technical issues with non-technical backgrounds.
  • Learn how the utility business operates with emphasis on operations.
  • Offer recommendations for technically sound and cost-effective solutions to specific problems.
  • Develop simple solutions to system problems including scopes of work with cost estimates and sequences.
  • Perform or support basic engineering design and specification of protective microprocessor relay schemes and settings.
  • Conduct power system studies, system protection settings coordination, and SCADA programming on various projects.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to field personnel during system disturbances or outages.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an accredited Engineering program.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous technical and/or professional experience.
  • An internship or co-op in engineering.
