About the position

The Engineer I - Grid Planning position at Alliant Energy involves performing routine engineering assignments under close supervision. The role focuses on planning and supporting the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of energy systems for various customer sectors. The position emphasizes safety, customer needs, and regulatory compliance while developing critical thinking and technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety rules and practices to identify and correct unsafe conditions for self and team.
  • Learn basic customer needs and expectations and strive to identify system problems and solutions with guidance.
  • Communicate and build relationships with employees, business unit stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Apply regulatory and organizational engineering standards, processes, and procedures to solve limited scope problems.
  • Facilitate meetings and lead discussions with stakeholders in support of system studies with guidance.
  • Develop critical thinking skills necessary for interpreting governmental regulations and company practices.
  • Learn risk assessment methodologies and make low-risk decisions with guidance.
  • Understand departmental budgeting and planning processes, including oversight of multi-year plans and development of scopes of work with cost estimates.
  • Learn about capital investments and O&M spending.
  • Understand system modeling methodologies and software, building simple models and performing power flow studies or analysis.
  • Learn about interconnection agreements and how studies support contract terms with guidance.
  • Support technical reviews and studies related to distribution energy resource interconnection applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an accredited Engineering program.
  • Previous technical and/or professional experience is preferred.
  • An internship or co-op in engineering is preferred.
