About the position

This is a front line engineering position within the Waterfront Engineering Directorate, specifically designed for candidates who will frequently interface with trades personnel in an active construction environment. The role involves troubleshooting complex fabrication, assembly, and major move activities, which are critical to the successful construction and repair of submarines. The selected engineer will be responsible for developing build strategies, methods, and fixtures that are essential for fabricating and assembling submarine components, structures, systems, and modules. The primary responsibilities of this position include the identification and development of methods and tools required by the shipbuilder. This encompasses the development of detailed designs for tools and fixtures, as well as the preparation of Manufacturing Engineering procedures that outline the sequence and alignment of critical installations. Additionally, the engineer will provide deckplate construction support, ensuring that all activities align with the specifications and requirements of the project. The work scope will focus on the construction of VIRGINIA Class submarines, as well as Overhaul and Repair projects, and COLUMBIA Class construction. Daily interactions with manufacturing and planning representatives from Groton, Quonset Point, Newport News, designers, and vendors are expected, which will facilitate effective communication and collaboration across various teams. Local travel between Groton and Quonset Point is a requirement of this position, allowing for hands-on support and oversight of construction activities.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Marine, or Physics engineering.
  • Broad understanding of structural/mechanical design, materials, weld design, and bolted joints.

Nice-to-haves

  • Construction support experience.
  • Master's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Marine engineering.
