The Engineer II (EII) at EarthScope Consortium, Inc. is responsible for managing and implementing multiple field projects that provide technical support for geophysical instruments and networks. This role involves arranging logistics and participating in field operations at various sites across the United States, polar latitudes, and other international locations. The EII builds upon the instrumentation knowledge acquired in previous engineering roles and collaborates with team members and other engineers from different projects and departments within the organization. Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, the EII will identify and propose new geophysical technologies and assist in training other staff and community members. The position also requires contributing to reporting and project documentation, ensuring that all work adheres to best practices and organizational standards. Engineers in this role act as ambassadors, representing these principles to scientists, landowners, sponsors, and other community members. The EII will report to the Engineering Manager or be assigned tasks by a higher-level engineer within designated project and functional areas. The responsibilities of the EII include implementing individual geophysical projects and assisting with the execution of multiple projects of limited complexity. This may involve logistics, site reconnaissance, site selection, permitting, installation activities, maintenance, network configuration, instrument operation, and data flow activities as part of a portfolio of geophysical technologies. The EII will identify and resolve standard technical issues related to geophysical sensor hardware, firmware, software, and data communications, seeking guidance on more complex problems when necessary. The role also includes assisting with the design and testing of new systems, evaluating instrument design and data/metadata, and ensuring appropriate documentation of activities and metadata using established tools and protocols. The EII will draft detailed technical reports for review, assist in developing technical documentation formats, and may have variable budgeting responsibilities, including developing cost estimates and tracking project expenditures. Additionally, the EII will develop and maintain good relationships with community members, suppliers, landowners, and business partners within their areas of expertise and project assignments.
