This position works out of our Sylmar, CA location in the Cardiac Rhythm Management division. As a global leader in Cardiac Rhythm Technologies, we focus on innovative technologies that can improve the way doctors treat people with heart arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. The Engineer II, Product Analysis performs failure analysis on explanted biomedical implant products and provides technical expertise to the Product Analysis Laboratory. This role involves analyzing failures, developing and implementing investigative protocols to identify root causes, performing circuit analysis, and conducting device and component level failure analysis. In this role, you will perform failure analysis on explanted long-term biomedical implant products. The work requires the application of theoretical principles, evaluation, ingenuity, and creative/analytical techniques to identify root cause failure mechanisms. You must be able to meet deadlines on multiple assignments and operate in a diverse cross-functional team environment. You will be proactive in finding quality improvements related to Failure Analysis and may serve as a lead, assigning work to less experienced personnel and mentoring them in solving complex problems. Collaboration with Product Development, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Product Surveillance is essential. You will also aid in defining test equipment as required to accomplish quality responsibilities and support all company initiatives as identified by management, in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements. Compliance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments is mandatory. Maintaining positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors is also a key aspect of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Perform failure analysis on explanted long-term biomedical implant products.
  • Develop and implement investigative protocols to identify root causes of failures.
  • Conduct circuit analysis and device/component level failure analysis.
  • Meet deadlines on multiple assignments in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Proactively find quality improvements related to Failure Analysis.
  • Serve as a lead and assign work to less experienced personnel.
  • Mentor less experienced lab staff in solving complex problems.
  • Collaborate with Product Development, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Product Surveillance.
  • Define test equipment as required to accomplish quality responsibilities.
  • Support company initiatives in compliance with QMS and EMS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred, or Engineering, Science, or closely related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in performing failure analysis.
  • Comprehensive written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, organizational, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects and converse effectively with all levels of employees.
  • Documented record of delivering reliability engineering information that adds value to management's decision-making process.
  • Advanced personal computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and specialized applications.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Advanced credential in relevant discipline/concentration.
  • Relevant professional certification or designation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in failure analysis in the medical device industry.
  • Academic or in-house courses in project management, Six-Sigma, leadership, Total Quality Management (TQM), and various technical applications.
