About the position

The Automation Engineer III position is a critical role within the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team, focusing on executing manufacturing automation development projects. This position requires a collaborative approach, as the engineer will interact with other automation team members and operations stakeholders from the inception of projects through to their introduction into production. The engineer will be responsible for managing multiple projects across various locations, ensuring that all aspects of the projects are executed efficiently and effectively. In this role, the engineer will engage in a variety of tasks including requirements definition, process development, concept development, mechanical design, system debugging, qualification, schedule management, budgeting, and communication. The individual must apply engineering principles to navigate complex projects from concept to closure, demonstrating a strong ability to lead or participate as a team member based on the workload assigned. As a project lead, the engineer will oversee the schedule, budget, and communication with both suppliers and internal customers. They will manage the activities of supporting project teams and internal development partners, ensuring that progress aligns with established plans. The engineer will also be responsible for driving innovation and integrating new technologies and quality initiatives into projects, while providing guidance and mentoring to less-experienced staff members. This role is essential for fostering a collaborative engineering environment and supporting the training of new employees in the use of equipment and departmental procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as project lead or project team member depending on workload assigned.
  • Responsible for requirements definition, process development, mechanical design, controls development, assembly, debug and qualification activities associated with the development of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • In project lead role, manages activities of supporting project teams and internal development partners; ensures progress against established plan and makes determinations based on analysis of business information to alter or update schedule and resource allocation to meet project requirements and development schedule.
  • Communicates progress and issues to stakeholders, peers and leadership.
  • Collaborates with internal manufacturing and development partners to resolve project scope, product design and/or process issues to ensure project meets performance, schedule and budget objectives.
  • Drives innovation and integration of new technologies and quality initiatives into projects and activities in the manufacturing and/or engineering organization.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced staff members.
  • Supports training of new employees in the use of equipment, system and equipment documentation, and department procedures.
  • Assists team members with complex and cross-functional projects.
  • Uses creative approaches in solving complex problems.
  • Integrates subsystems and components in total systems design.
  • Works on special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • 4 years of experience in related field.
  • Strong background in using project and program planning tools and software packages to create, manage, and track project results.
  • Highly skilled in mechanical design using 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks.
  • Background in statistical analysis, including gage capability, process capability and design of experiments.
  • Experience with controls systems development is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and successful experience managing projects, including communicating with stakeholders and leading matrixed teams and resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
