About the position

The Civil Structural Engineer at Qualus is responsible for providing design services for high voltage electric facilities, specifically focusing on substation and transmission engineering. This role involves collaboration with various project leads and vendors, ensuring that engineering and design efforts align with project schedules and client standards. The position also emphasizes mentorship and ongoing technical training, contributing to the development of the engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of substation structural design including rigid bus analysis and design of electrical substation steel structures, equipment foundations, and secondary oil containment.
  • Develop steel and concrete construction specifications, cost estimates, engineering proposals, and project schedules.
  • Understand and apply engineering standards including NESC, IEEE, IBC, ANSI, AISC, and ACI.
  • Coordinate with all disciplines contributing to electrical substation design.
  • Prepare calculation packages to satisfy client and code requirements.
  • Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients.
  • Collaborate with project engineers and project managers to ensure engineering and design efforts meet project schedule requirements.
  • Manage 3rd party engineering efforts in support of civil and structural engineering for substation and transmission projects.
  • Support proposal development.
  • Mentor and train other team members.
  • Adhere to client standards and processes while completing complex designs individually or within a team.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training through work assignments and selected 3rd party classes.
  • Identify potential project-related problems and propose solutions.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs.
  • Travel out of town for short periods as required by projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering from a US accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in civil and/or structural engineering.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
  • Ability to obtain licensure within two (2) years of hire.
  • Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail.
  • Finite Element modeling experience; Risa3D or STAAD Pro.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, soil mechanics, and foundation design.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks of varying importance and size.
  • Ability to participate in multiple projects concurrently and manage budgets and schedules.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Effective communication skills with co-workers, vendors, clients, etc.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
