About the position

The Field Service Engineer for the Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) of Thermo Fisher Scientific plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful installation, servicing, and repair of complex electron microscopy equipment and systems. This position is integral to the MSD EM business, which is dedicated to providing high-performance microscopy solutions that enable customers to make significant discoveries in various fields, including materials science, life sciences, and semiconductor technology. The engineer will be responsible for on-site installations, conducting maintenance visits, and providing diagnostic and repair support to customers. This role not only requires technical expertise but also emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with customers and collaborating with colleagues to ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence. As a Field Service Engineer, you will be expected to conduct thorough testing procedures to ensure that all equipment is functioning correctly and to provide training to customers on system maintenance. You will also be responsible for completing field service reports and maintaining documentation related to the systems you work on. Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site installation, servicing, and repair of complex electron microscopy equipment and systems.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance visits and provide diagnostic support for customers.
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with customers and company personnel.
  • Complete technical training and identify additional learning opportunities.
  • Travel to customer sites to resolve problems or support other field service personnel.
  • Complete and submit field service reports and documentation.
  • Provide training for customers on system maintenance and operation.
  • Act as a subject expert and resource for training new field service engineers.
  • Provide feedback to product quality teams and assist in documentation updates.

Requirements

  • University degree/Bachelor degree in electronics, physics, engineering, computer science or similar field preferred; or 5-10 years of equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
  • 5-10 years' experience operating, diagnosing, repairing and calibrating complex analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, FIB, Prober or similar systems is a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical issues and coach others.
  • Thorough understanding and extensive experience troubleshooting and repairing ultra-high vacuum and high voltage systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork, time management, organizational, problem solving, conflict management and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and work under pressure with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with operating O-scopes and digital voltmeters.
