About the position

The Process Automation Project Team Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting automation systems as part of the company's modernization efforts. This full-time, exempt-level position is based in Decatur, IL, or at other nearby ADM manufacturing sites, including Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Columbus, or Erlanger. The engineer will collaborate closely with Operations and the Technology Center to execute projects while adhering to global standards. The primary focus will be on identifying opportunities for automation that can mitigate risks, enhance efficiency, and drive optimization within modernization projects. In addition to project execution, the engineer will be responsible for advancing the standardization and documentation of automation systems. This role will also involve providing high-level technical support to automation colleagues at the plant level, acting as a subject matter expert on various process control platforms utilized by ADM. The engineer will be expected to maintain a thorough understanding of production processes, equipment, and operations to develop, improve, and maintain process and safety interlocks. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, including the development or modification of automation controls to achieve desired control processes and troubleshooting systems to identify and resolve hardware or software deficiencies. The engineer will utilize capital project guidelines to prioritize process automation projects from concept through project approval and delivery, ensuring that all projects meet the required deliverables and timelines. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for maintaining documentation related to automation hardware and software, communicating status updates, and suggesting improvements as necessary. The role also includes coaching and developing colleagues, acting as a technical lead for the modernization of plant control systems, and providing governance and oversight of automation vendors involved in modernization efforts. The engineer must be able to work in extreme temperatures, climb stairs, lift and move a minimum of 40 pounds, and work in confined spaces and heights. Travel may be required as part of the job responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project support for automation systems focusing on modernization efforts.
  • Collaborate with Operations and the Technology Center to execute projects.
  • Identify opportunities for automation to mitigate risk and improve efficiency.
  • Support and advance the standardization and documentation of automation systems.
  • Provide high-level technical support to automation colleagues at the plant level.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of production processes, equipment, and operations.
  • Develop or modify automation controls to achieve desired control processes.
  • Troubleshoot systems to identify and resolve hardware or software deficiencies.
  • Utilize capital project guidelines to prioritize process automation projects.
  • Develop and maintain documentation of automation hardware and software.
  • Communicate status updates and suggestions for improvements.
  • Coach and develop other colleagues in automation practices.
  • Act as technical lead for modernization of plant control systems.
  • Provide governance and oversight of automation vendors delivering modernization.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience with process control in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV, Novatech D/3 systems, or Rockwell PlantPAx Distributed Control System (DCS) applications.
  • Familiarity with Industrial Networks (TCP/IP, ControlNet, DH+, Modbus, etc.) and Operational Technology.
  • Knowledge of Industrial Process Control including instrumentation, AC/DC Electrical systems, and Piping & Instrument Diagrams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, solve, and repair issues with control systems and work safely with AC & DC voltages up to 120V.

Nice-to-haves

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, or a similar Engineering or technical discipline.
