About the position

Toyota's North America Safety Department is seeking a passionate and highly motivated Industrial Hygienist for the Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC). This facility will be the company's first automotive battery plant globally, focusing on the development and production of lithium-ion batteries for an expanding portfolio of electrified vehicles. The plant is set to come online in 2025 and will feature 14 production lines, including four for Hybrid Electric Vehicles and ten for Battery Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The Industrial Hygienist will work the Weekend Night Shift from 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM, Thursday through Sunday. In this role, the Industrial Hygienist will provide technical assistance to plant and field operations to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Company health and safety regulations. The individual will support the Toyota Safety Department's objective to prioritize safety through standardization, aiming for the best safety performance and an incident-free workplace. Responsibilities include leading and driving safety initiatives within the Industrial Hygiene program, conducting exposure assessments, and recommending appropriate controls such as engineering solutions, management strategies, training, and personal protective equipment. The position also involves conducting quantitative monitoring and sampling for chemical, physical, and biological stressors, reviewing plans and procedures, and assisting in the design specifications to ensure the implementation of approved industrial hygiene practices. The Industrial Hygienist will investigate overexposures, accidents, and deviations from approved practices, providing input to hazardous material communications and managing all Industrial Hygiene-related internal company requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, support, and drive safety initiatives within the Industrial Hygiene program.
  • Conduct exposure assessments including the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls.
  • Conduct quantitative monitoring/sampling for chemical, physical, and biological stressors.
  • Review plans and procedures, and assist in design specifications to ensure implementation of approved industrial hygiene practices.
  • Investigate overexposure, accidents, and deviations from approved industrial hygiene practices and assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Provide input to hazardous material communications.
  • Administer the Chemical Approval Process.
  • Manage all Industrial Hygiene (IH) related internal company requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant field.
  • Industrial Hygiene experience, including conducting evaluations within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with safety systems, regulatory policy and compliance, or equipment engineering.
  • Experience gathering and analyzing data and visualizing it through effective reports and presentations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene, environmental science, environmental health, or environmental engineering.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification.
  • CSP certification or other Professional Safety Certification(s).
  • Battery Manufacturing experience.
  • Hazard identification experience.
  • Safety incident investigation experience.
  • Chemical manufacturing experience.
  • Ergonomics experience.
