About the position

The Engineer Intern Applicant position is an entry-level role within the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) focused on providing practical engineering experience under close supervision. This role is designed for individuals who are in the process of obtaining their Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate and involves assisting with various engineering tasks related to bridge inspection and maintenance, project management, and design activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily operations of the District's Bridge Inspection Program.
  • Provide functional supervision over the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance and Bridge Electrician's gangs.
  • Check bridge inspection reports for accuracy and recommend bridge repair methods to Engineer 6.
  • Design retrofits for steel bridge members, temporary shoring, bridge deck repairs, and bridge pile repairs.
  • Assist with the coordination of materials, equipment, labor, press releases, and traffic control plans for inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Perform quality control bridge inspections with Bridge Inspector 5 to ensure detailed inspections are conducted.
  • Conduct final acceptance and inventory/initial inspection of new bridges.
  • Compile and review relevant maintenance and inspection data to assess current bridge condition.
  • Assist the Engineer 6 with the District Guardrail Repair contract management.
  • Coordinate with the guardrail contractor for repairs/replacements and submit necessary repair and cost documentation.
  • Assist the Engineer 6 with overseeing facility projects to ensure completion on schedule and under budget.
  • Draft plans and facility sketches, provide cost estimates, and determine building specifications.
  • Compile information for requests made by public and private agencies regarding repair work and inspections.
  • Assist in the design of proposed bridge projects and review plans and specifications for upcoming projects.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Completion of college hours or degree from an accredited college or university.
