About the position

The Engineer Intern Applicant - Engineer 5 position at the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) in Baton Rouge, LA, is designed for individuals who are nearing graduation with an Engineering degree. This role provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and basic engineering skills in a practical setting, focusing on coastal levee inspection and evaluation programs. The intern will work closely with the Coastal Levee Boards and other Flood Control Entities, contributing to the development and implementation of essential engineering projects aimed at protecting and restoring coastal areas. In this role, the intern will be responsible for conducting hurricane damage assessments and performing periodic on-site inspections of levees, floodwalls, and associated infrastructure. Utilizing specialized inspection equipment, the intern will gather data and provide technical support to ensure the integrity and safety of these critical structures. The position also involves reviewing design reports, plans, and specifications, as well as monitoring and maintaining project files and folders. Drafting correspondence directed to private owners, consulting engineers, and local, state, and federal government agencies will also be a key responsibility. As part of the Career Progression Group, this position may lead to various levels of Engineer Intern roles, depending on the applicant's experience. The maximum salary for the Engineer 5 level is $126,256 annually, with bi-weekly special entrance rates established for different intern levels. This is a temporary position intended for individuals securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate, and permanent status will not be granted to those in this role. Official transcripts will be required upon hire, and applicants must complete an electronic application to be considered for this vacancy.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support to the Coastal Levee Boards and other Flood Control Entities in developing and implementing the coastal area levee inspection and evaluation program.
  • Conducts hurricane damage assessments and periodic on-site inspections of levees, floodwalls, and associated infrastructure using specialized inspection equipment.
  • Reviews design reports, plans, and specifications.
  • Monitors, maintains, and updates project files and folders.
  • Drafts correspondence directed to private owners, consulting engineers, local state, and federal government agencies.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
