About the position

The Louisiana Department of Health is seeking an Engineer Intern Applicant for the Office of Public Health, specifically within the Engineering Services for Calcasieu Parish. This position is classified and may be filled as a probationary, promotional, or detail appointment. The role is highly responsible and professional, requiring the application of technical skills and scientific principles to prevent and control communicable disease transmission, particularly concerning drinking water and domestic wastewater. The tasks involved are complex and specialized, necessitating extensive training and experience, often performed without supervision. The Engineer Intern will analyze and implement environmental activities necessary for public health engineering within the Central Louisiana Region. Responsibilities include conducting surveys and evaluations of water and wastewater facilities to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, reviewing and approving technical engineering plans and specifications, and providing functional supervision and technical assistance to various stakeholders, including consulting engineers and public officials. The intern will also assist in collecting and interpreting chemical and bacteriological data, evaluating public health risks, and recommending treatment practices to ensure compliance with Safe Drinking Water Rules. Additionally, the position involves coordinating and performing public health engineering responses to emergencies, such as floods and outbreaks of communicable diseases. This role is part of a Career Progression Group, allowing for advancement within the job series based on qualifications. The starting salary will depend on the selected applicant's education and experience, with a range provided for different intern levels. This position is temporary, intended for those securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate, and does not lead to permanent status.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and implement environmental activities for public health engineering in Central Louisiana.
  • Conduct surveys and evaluations of water and wastewater facilities to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Review and approve technical engineering plans and specifications for water and wastewater facilities.
  • Provide functional supervision and technical assistance to consulting engineers, architects, and public officials.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
