About the position

The Engineer Intern Applicant position is designed to provide practical experience in engineering under the supervision of a higher-level engineer. The primary function of this role is to assist the Engineer 6 (Project Engineer) in various tasks related to contract administration, project inspection, and documentation review. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that contractors perform high-quality work in accordance with established plans, specifications, and special provisions. This position is temporary and is intended for individuals who are in the process of obtaining a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate. The role involves close supervision and may include functional oversight of engineering technicians. The Engineer Intern Applicant will engage in a variety of tasks that apply engineering principles and practices, thereby gaining valuable experience necessary for licensure. The job entails overseeing construction activities for rural and urban highways, bridges, and drainage structures, as well as reviewing the work of engineering technicians. The incumbent will also be involved in the review of proposed plans and specifications, ensuring compliance with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) standards. During construction, the Engineer Intern Applicant will act as a first level of remediation for any disputes or issues that arise, negotiating resolutions with contractors as necessary. The role requires sound decision-making based on project specifications and available resources. In addition to construction oversight, the Engineer Intern Applicant will assist in generating and processing pay estimates and change orders, ensuring accurate documentation and calculations. The position also involves reviewing erosion control plans, enforcing traffic control requirements, and monitoring railroad construction projects for compliance with safety standards. The incumbent will participate in data collection and engineering calculations to identify plan errors and provide solutions, as well as assist in the hiring process for new employees within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all construction of rural and urban highways, bridges, drainage structures, and paving operations.
  • Reviews engineer technicians' work, including correspondence, engineering calculations, and documentation of quantities.
  • Assists in directing engineer technicians in construction inspection, sampling and testing, and contract administration.
  • Reviews proposed plans and specifications during project development to ensure compliance with LADOTD standards.
  • Resolves disputes during construction based on interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Generates and processes partial pay estimates and change orders, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Reviews erosion control plans and enforces traffic control requirements on construction projects.
  • Consults with contractors on project progress, plan changes, and traffic control issues.
  • Performs data collection and engineering calculations to identify plan errors and provide alternate solutions.
  • Conducts drainage surveys to assist with proper sizing of drainage structures.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Completion of college hours or degree from an accredited college or university.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Experience in construction project management or engineering.
