The Engineer Intern Applicant position is designed to provide practical experience in the field of engineering while assisting the Engineer 6 (Project Engineer). The incumbent will ensure that contractors deliver high-quality work in accordance with established plans, specifications, and special provisions. This role is crucial for gaining hands-on experience and understanding the application of engineering principles in real-world scenarios. As part of the Career Progression Group, this position may lead to various levels of engineering internships or professional engineering roles, depending on the applicant's qualifications and experience. The Engineer Intern Applicant is expected to be eligible for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate, which is a prerequisite for further advancement in the engineering field. The position is temporary, intended for individuals who are in the process of obtaining their certification, and it does not confer permanent status. The role involves close supervision from higher-level engineers, and while it may include functional supervision over Engineering Technicians, the primary focus is on learning and applying engineering skills under guidance. The work environment may vary, as the position can be utilized by all state agencies, providing a broad exposure to different engineering projects and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Engineer 6 (Project Engineer) with contract administration.
  • Process change orders and resolve construction disputes.
  • Interpret project specifications and conduct project inspections.
  • Review documentation to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Supervise laboratory units engaged in sampling and testing materials.
  • Assist in economic justification studies for proposed engineering facilities.
  • Apply basic engineering formulas to routine calculations.
  • Train operators in the safe and efficient operation of water and sewerage plants.
  • Collect samples for chemical and bacteriological analysis.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Completion of college hours or degree from an accredited college or university.
