About the position

The Engineer Intern Applicant position is a temporary role within the Traffic Engineering Division of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD). The primary focus of this position is to assist in the design and review of traffic control devices, conduct traffic studies, and evaluate roadway geometric features for state roadway projects. The intern will gain practical experience in traffic engineering principles under close supervision, with the potential for future conversion to a probational appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the project manager for the design of project plans for traffic control devices, including signs, pavement markings, and traffic signals.
  • Utilize CAD software to prepare project plans, including title sheets, summary sheets, and special details.
  • Prepare cost estimates and shop drawings, and calculate signal timings.
  • Review and develop roadway geometry to ensure compliance with DOTD policy and national design guidance.
  • Act as a task manager for the review of traffic control, signing, traffic signals, and project permits.
  • Prepare and review traffic-engineering reports/studies based on field data collection and interpretation.
  • Perform engineering calculations to determine roadway geometric features and develop solutions to design constraints.
  • Utilize traffic-engineering software for signal timings and traffic measures of effectiveness.
  • Assist in the development of Department policy through the interpretation of State and Federal publications.
  • Prepare Standard Plans and typical details for project plans.
  • Provide technical guidance in writing Traffic Engineering scopes for other sections of the Department and train lower-level staff.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices, traffic studies, and roadway geometric features.
  • Familiarity with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other relevant engineering manuals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CAD software and traffic-engineering software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and other stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $4,167.00 - $7,502.00 Monthly based on experience and education.
