About the position

As an Engineer Intern in Mechanical Engineering at Pierce Manufacturing, you will play a vital role in supporting various engineering functions within the company. This internship is designed for students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, and it will provide you with hands-on experience in a dynamic and innovative environment. You will assist a variety of engineers, including design, production, manufacturing, industrial, and test engineers, with multiple tasks that are essential to the mechanical engineering functions at Pierce Manufacturing. Your responsibilities will include preparing vehicle component layouts using CAD software such as CATIA, selecting parts or components with a focus on quality-conscious design, and following projects on the assembly floor for prototype, pilot, or production builds. You will provide technical assistance and generate engineering calculations related to weight distribution, stress analysis, and performance estimations. Additionally, you will consult with suppliers, customers, and internal departments to find solutions to engineering problems, perform or assist in testing complete vehicles or vehicle components, and create and manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) using the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. This internship will also involve designing, modeling, and testing new mechanical systems that integrate with vehicles, as well as updating the bill of materials in the Product Data Management (PDM) system to reflect product changes. The specific duties may vary depending on the business unit and location of the internship, providing you with a broad exposure to the mechanical engineering field and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that impact the community.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare vehicle component layouts using CAD software (e.g., CATIA).
  • Select parts or components for quality-conscious design, considering weight, cost, reliability, and ease of manufacturing.
  • Follow projects on the assembly floor for prototype, pilot, or production builds and provide technical assistance.
  • Generate engineering calculations of weight distribution, stress analysis, and performance estimations.
  • Consult with suppliers, customers, and internal departments to find solutions to problems.
  • Perform or assist in the testing of complete vehicles or vehicle components.
  • Create and manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) using the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Design, model, and test new mechanical systems that integrate with a vehicle.
  • Update bill of materials in the Product Data Management (PDM) system to reflect product changes.
  • Perform all other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Student working towards a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field for the entire duration of the internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in extracurricular activities outside academic requirements.
  • Previous internship experience or work-related experience.
  • Experience using CATIA, Pro-E, or a similar CAD system is a plus.
  • Previous experience or heightened interest in mechanical design.
