About the position

The Manufacturing Engineer 3 position at Newport News Shipbuilding involves designing manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for various assemblies, equipment installations, processing, machining, and material handling. The role requires the engineer to design the arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure the most efficient and productive layout. Additionally, the engineer will design the sequence of operations and specify procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment, as well as other functions that affect product performance. The position also entails adapting machine or equipment designs to factory and production conditions, incorporating inspection and test requirements into the production plan, and inspecting the performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency. The engineer will investigate and initiate corrective actions for problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality. As a Subject Matter Expert on Supplier Technical Assessment and Validation (STAVs), the Manufacturing Engineer will examine manufacturing processes and quality systems at critical suppliers. This role includes providing technical and project management support by managing open Corrective and Preventive Action Requests (CPARs) while working directly with suppliers to address manufacturing weaknesses and mitigate production risks. Previous experience as a manufacturing engineer or quality engineer is desired, and the ability to travel is required, with expectations of 25% to 50% travel time. Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program, with relevant experience varying based on educational qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Design manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining, and material handling.
  • Design the arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure efficient and productive layout.
  • Specify procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions affecting product performance.
  • Adapt machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions.
  • Incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan.
  • Inspect performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify efficiency and investigate problems and deficiencies.
  • Develop manufacturing processes applicable to statistical process control and develop those techniques.
  • Provide guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.
  • Ensure processes and procedures comply with regulations.
  • Function as a Subject Matter Expert on Supplier Technical Assessment and Validation (STAVs) assessments.
  • Examine manufacturing processes and quality systems at critical suppliers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
  • Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Previous experience as a manufacturing engineer or quality engineer is desired.
